STARTING PLAY

When you start rE/Gen, it will begin in fullscreen mode. Use the menu or the function keys to switch between fullscreen and windowed mode. You can skip the intro by holding down the spacebar.

Menu Options

THE STATUS AREA

The bottom of the game screen contains the status area. This dispays show important information such as your number of remaining lives, your grenade and shield stocks, special messages, and more. This image shows you what each part of the display contains.

MOVING THE CHARACTER

You can move using either the cursor keys or the number pad (make sure Num Lock is on for the latter). Since this game uses an "isometric" perspective, the compass points are along the diagonal. Therefore, pushing the Up Arrow cursor key will move the charater North in the game world, which is diagonally.

It may take some time to get used to the control scheme, but once you do it will seem natural. Experiment with the controls on the first game screen to get a feel for them.

EQUIPMENT

There are items to be found in the game which will allow you to better defend yourself and make progress through the facility. Here are the most important items.

LASER PISTOL

The laser pistol is a critical item that you will need to find as soon as possible. Not only will it allow you to defend yourself, but the reflective laser shots it fires can be useful for hitting switches from a distance.

Once you find the laser, fire it with the CTRL key. You can fire multiple shots, and shots will ricochet off of walls and some objects. Normal door switches can be activated with laser shots.

Be warned, while your shots won't hurt yourself (thanks to the combat defense jumpsuit you wear), it will harm other people. So watch your shots!

Some objects and enemies cannot be harmed by the laser. You will need to find plasma grenades or other means of dealing with them.

The laser has unlimited shots, thanks to a small nuclear power source.

Caution: Extended use may cause sterility.

PLASMA GRENADES

Plasma grenades are small magnetic bottles containing plasma energy. They do much more damage than the laser, but are single-use items.

You throw a plasma grenade by tapping the SHIFT key. Your current stock of grenades is shown at the bottom of the status area beside the grenade icon.

Warning: Not to be left within reach of children or junior technical staff.

NEGATION SHIELDS

The latest spin-off technology from one of Genoq's "dark matter" patents, this advanced personal force field renders the wearer immune to all harm for a brief period. It's safe for human contact, but any Neogen touching an active negation shield will be nullified. As an extra bonus, it makes you look like a photo negative when in effect.

You activate a negation shield by tapping the SPACE bar. Your current stock of shields is shown at the bottom of the status area beside the shield icon.

KEYCARDS

You will find keycards at various points during your exploration. Make sure you collect these, as certain doors will not open without the proper authorization level.

Your current authorization level is shown at the bottom of the status area beside the keycard icon.

DOORS

There are three kinds of door in the facility.

NORMAL DOORS

These are blue, and are usually activated by a yellow wall switch. A laser bolt, grenade, or even enemy can trigger the switch as well.

LOCKED DOORS

These are green, and are typically activated by a green wall switch. Each one has a required security level to open, and if you don't have that level access or higher, it won't open for you. Increase your security level by finding keycards.

SECURE DOORS

These are red, and they only open when a room is secure. A room is secure when there are no visible Neogens or open Vents. Be careful, a secure room is not always a safe room!

If any door tries to close while someone (or something) is resting on it, it will wait until clear before shutting.

DEFENSES

The platform facility is defended by several security measures. These are the most common ones you will encounter.

ZAPPERS

Electrified grids in the floor. Some will cycle on and off at different rates, others will stay on until shut down by other means. Most will simply have to be avoided.

FENCERS

Bouncing walls of energy. Fencers bounce in a predictable way off of walls. They destroy any person or Neogen they come in contact with.

TRACKERS

Autonomous defense turrets. These green cyclopsian machines target any humanoid moving through a room. They fire on anyone entering their range of vision, launching plasma grenades at them. Trackers stop laser bolts without harm, but can be taken out with a grenade. (Even one fired from another Tracker.) Some sweep the room at various rates of rotation, others stand sentinel guarding a single approach.

Vents

Vents are not technically defenses, but rather part of the facilities air circulation system. However, due to the current crisis, all vents have been opened for emergency purging. Unfortunately, some of the Neogens have figured out how to move about using the vents. Clear a vent area of Neogens and then walk over the vent to close it.

PEOPLE

Often you will encounter people trapped in various rooms throughout the platform. Once you secure the room, you can approach them. If they have something to say, they will initiate a conversation. (see Conversations)

After a conversation is over, guide the person to the room's exit (marked with a pink arrow). Once they are close enough to see the exit clearly, they will leave on their own. Make sure you stay in the room until they have completely exited. Once they exit the room safely, they will head back to the hydrofoil and you'll earn an extra life!

CONVERSATIONS

People you rescue will often have something to say to you. They will approach you, and when close enough, a dialog will begin. The conversation window will open. At the top is the person's name and their job. Below is anything they have to say, and beneath that is a list of replies you can make. Different replies will often lead to different conversations, and some may result in important information or even a useful item!

You can always end the conversation by saying "Let's go", at which point they'll want you to escort them safely to the exit.

Navigate the conversation menu by using the up/down cursor keys to select a reply, and press ENTER to speak the selected reply.
